An international student reflects on how newcomers contribute to Sarnia’s economy and culture, while urging the city to address the housing and employment barriers they still face.

When I first arrived in Sarnia as an international student, I came with hopes of earning an education and building a better future. What I didn’t expect was how quickly I would become part of the local community. Living here has shown me that international students are not just visitors—we are contributors.
Every day, international students support Sarnia’s economy in ways that often go unnoticed. We rent apartments, shop at local grocery stores, eat in local restaurants, use local services, and spend our earnings in the community. That spending helps local businesses grow and supports jobs throughout the city.
Many of us also work in sectors that need employees, including retail, hospitality, healthcare support, transportation, and customer service. We help businesses operate, especially during busy periods, while gaining valuable Canadian work experience.
But our contribution goes beyond economics. We bring different cultures, languages, and ideas that make Sarnia more diverse and connected to the world. We volunteer, attend community events, and build friendships with our neighbours. These experiences create stronger communities and help break down cultural barriers.
Like many newcomers, we also face challenges. Affordable housing can be difficult to find, transportation options are limited for some workers and students, and finding employment that matches our education or experience is not always easy. These challenges are real, but they can be addressed through community support and thoughtful local policies.
Sarnia has many qualities that make it a wonderful place to live: friendly people, a beautiful waterfront, a safe environment, and a strong sense of community. By continuing to welcome newcomers and creating opportunities for them to succeed, our city can attract talented people who choose to stay, work, and give back.
International students come here to learn, but we also come here to contribute. When our community recognizes that, everyone benefits. Investing in newcomers is not simply helping students—it is investing in Sarnia’s future.
