A crosswalk to honour Indigenous children taken from their homes and sent to residential schools will be installed this spring in Sarnia, thanks to a boost from Lambton’s Creative County Committee.
The $5,000 grant to the city’s UNDRIP Committee (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) will go toward installing the crosswalk, meant as a symbol of courage for survivors of residential schools and a tribute to the lives lost, the city said.
The recommended design is orange with seven white feathers to represent the seven grandfather teachings of wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility and truth.
The recommended location is the entrance to Canatara Park at Cathcart Boulevard and Christina Street.
If additional funding becomes available a second commemorative crosswalk could be installed at the intersection of Front and Lochiel streets, the city said.
