Lambton College is moving ahead with the removal of its North Building, an aging facility on the north end of the campus, as part of ongoing efforts to renew key infrastructure and enhance the student and community experience.

The building, which originally served as the first residence in Ontario’s college system, later housed academic programming and office space. Now at the end of its lifespan, the North Building is undergoing demolition. The project is being carried out with careful planning to ensure that nearby services remain operational.

“The North Building represents a significant part of our story as a community college,” said Rob Kardas, President & CEO of Lambton College. “It has served our students, employees and the community for decades. The building originally operated as our first student residence, but through the years it was also used for academic programming and office space.”

The EarlyON Child & Family Centre, located adjacent to the North Building, will remain open throughout the demolition. Minor exterior repair work is planned where the two buildings were connected, with completion expected by early summer.

“As we planned for this project, it was important to us that the EarlyON Centre experience minimal disruption throughout the construction process,” Kardas said. “The Centre is a vital part of the lives of countless local families, and an integral component of the real-world experience we provide to our Early Childhood Education students.”

The demolition is part of Lambton’s multi-phase campus revitalization plan, launched in 2015. While there are currently no plans to replace the North Building, its removal represents another step in modernizing the campus environment and preparing for future development.

“These upgrades reflect Lambton’s ongoing dedication to creating a modern and vibrant campus environment that promotes academic excellence, social connection, and community engagement,” Kardas said.
