The Breast Cancer Society of Canada is giving $5 million to the London Health Sciences Foundation, the largest funding commitment ever from the Sarnia-based organization.

The money will support research at the Pamela Greenaway-Kohlmeier Translational Breast Cancer Research Unit in London.

We are grateful for this remarkable, ongoing support,” unit director Dr. Ann Chambers said.

The donation is the lead gift in a $200-million fundraising campaign at London Health Sciences Centre that surpassed the halfway mark earlier this year.

The Breast Cancer Society of Canada is a national organization founded in Sarnia 23 years ago by Lawrence and Kay Greenaway in memory of their daughter.

Pam Greenaway-Kohlmeier died of breast cancer at the age of 38, leaving behind two small children and a loving husband.

Since then, the society has raised more than $10 million for cancer research at the London hospital.
