Surrounded by love on September 27, 2024, Garry Ross Steele passed away at the age of 85. Dad was the first born to the late S. Switzer and Wilhelmine Steele. Loving husband of Marilyn Steele (Matheson) for 67 years. Devoted Dad to Marleen (Mark), Carlton (Lindsay and Phil Pomoransky, Ross and Julie Carlton), Darci (Ron) DeMeester (Jason and Jamie, Shawn DeMeester), Tracy (John) Dawson (Jennifer and Peter Reitano, Murray and Tami Dawson, Johnny (Sarah) Dawson, Adam and Bre Dawson, Mary Beth and Bryan Bogeart, Rebecca Dawson), Laurie (Jay) Tomlinson (Amy and Phil, Ally and Brad, Leigh Ann and Chris) and his 4 legged best friend Darla. Also missed by 25 great-grandchildren. Dad was the best big brother to Wayne (Penni), Eric (Pat), Twyla (late Siep, ‘05) Van Reenan and Sheldon and Wendy. Brother-in-law to Mary Anne Beaudoin (late Bob, ’04) and Dan Watson. Special Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his in-laws, Lloyd and Annie Matheson. Dad started his career as a firefighter in 1959, which lasted his working career. During those years he was Captain, Chief, trainer, and Fire Marshall. He was instrumental in coordinating 911 in Lambton County. He also drove truck, cement, gravel, water and more, on his days off from the firehall. Those days off also allowed him to squeeze in farming, working 50 acres with a two furrow plow. Providing for his 5 girls was most important to him. Thank you to the EMS girls in Sarnia, all the Drs.’ and nurses at Sarnia Emergency, Victoria Hospital trauma unit and the ICU. Your kindness and care for our Dad was amazing. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Sunday, October 6, 2024 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation held one hour prior from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to London Road West United Church, Sarnia & District Humane Society, or a charity of choice would be appreciated (cheques only at the funeral home please).
