A pilot project is underway at the Blue Water Bridge to make it easier for local drivers to cross into the U.S.
New signs now designates the far right toll lane, known as Lane 1, for vehicles entering Highway 402 between Indian Road and Front Street.
The intention is to provide local travellers easy access to the bridge and eliminate the need for crossing over multiple lanes between transport trucks, said André Girard, a spokesperson with the Federal Bridge Corporation.
“We constantly look at new ways to ease the traffic,” he said. “It’s a new habit to acquire for a while and we’re going to be testing it until February.”
Until last week, Lane 1 was designated for transport trucks only.
The pilot was proposed after reviewing traffic patterns of vehicles accessing the toll plaza.
“So far it’s going very well,” Girard said.
“We work with our stakeholders, and it’s a constant concern to make the traffic flow through the crossing as smooth as possible and as quickly as possible.”
The change is unrelated to recent transport collisions on that stretch of highway, he added.
