A popular local fashion show is going to the dogs – and that’s not a bad thing.

Unleashed is a fundraiser for the Sarnia Humane Society that’s returning July 8 following a multi-year hiatus.

“In the past, we always just focused on the fashion side of things,” said organizer Trista Lowe. “But this year we want to implement the animal side of it, and being outdoors we can do that.”

The licensed show will be on the lawn beside Stoke’s Bay and feature a 100-foot runway on which models and shelter dogs will strut their stuff.

It will begin with a standard fashion show followed by a procession of the classy canines, all of them available for adoption, Lowe said.

“We’re anticipating a large influx of dogs in the weeks leading up to the event, and those dogs will be featured in our fashion show.”

Two-legged models will showcase wardrobes of all types, including offerings from local shops, while the canines will take the stage fresh from a groomer that operates out of the Exmouth Street shelter.

Previous shows attracted about 800 people and Lowe expects at least that many again this summer. The event is unique in that it’s the only city fashion show in which all proceeds benefit a local non-profit.

“In the past, Unleashed has raised $10,000 and this year we hope we can double that,” she said.

Following the show, an after party and DJ will carry the 18-plus crowd into the night.
