A $41-million seniors’ housing complex Sarnia approved in 2017 to replace the derelict Devine Street School remains unbuilt, but the project isn’t dead.
Last month, the city’s committee of adjustment granted a variance to Overture Investments to address a shortage of parking cited in the original plan, said city planner Max Williams.
The public appeal process ended Feb. 24.
Overture has proposed an eight-storey assisted living complex as well as a five-storey long-term care home at Devine and Brock streets.
It received overwhelming support from neighbours and city council unanimously approved zoning and Official Plan amendments in October of 2017.
What happens next is up to the applicant, Williams said.
When contacted, an Overture spokesperson declined comment and directed The Journal to speak to City Hall.
The privately owned Canadian real estate investment company bought the property in May of 2016.
