A group fighting the closure of SCITS has launched an online petition in an 11th-hour bid to save the city high school.

SaveScits says it’s not opposed to SCITS and St. Clair Secondary amalgamating, but argues the best move for students and the community is to retain the historic facility on Wellington Street.

“The impact of losing the heart of downtown Sarnia will not only be felt by those that have children attending the school, but will ripple through the city and into the county,” states the petition, which can found at www.savescits.ca

Lambton Kent District School Board brass want the two half-empty schools merged this fall. All students would attend SCITS for a year, and then move permanently to a renovated St. Clair.

The board’s plan has met with stiff opposition in Sarnia from residents, businesses and even the city itself, which did a community impact study that concluded St. Clair is the right school to close.

The board hosts a final meeting on the issue at its administrative headquarters April 26.

Trustees are expected to vote May 10 on the closure plan at Alexander Mackenzie secondary.
