Sarnia has picked a company to provide Internet and telephone voting in the 2018 municipal election.

Nova Scotia-based Intelivote Systems Inc. was approved in a 5-3 council vote last week.

Councillors had already authorized the alternative voting methods, and most said last week they will appeal to a younger demographic and make voting easier, faster and more convenient.

“It’s time that Sarnia moved into the future,” said Coun. Bev MacDougall.

But others expressed concerns about security, citing the potential for hackers to disrupt the election with fraudulent results.

The details have yet to be worked out with Intelivote, which will be paid $130,219 for its services.
