Construction on the future site of Sarnia’s Great Lakes Secondary School is right on schedule, officials say.

“We’re still on a timeline for September, 2018 to return all the students to that site,” said Gary Girardi, superintendent of capital planning and accommodation for the Lambton Kent District School Board.

Girardi said the demolition phase at the former St. Clair Secondary School building at Murphy Road and Wellington Street is nearing completion, while tenders for phase two – the renovation and addition phase-- have been prepared.

That includes outfitting the school to accommodate some 1,100 students expected to arrive in 2018, as well as the new theatre.

Trustees made the controversial decision in May of 2016 to house the amalgamated student body at the SCITS building on Wellington Street while the St. Clair property is redeveloped.

“We’re really pleased with the students and staff and community with making Great Lakes one school,” said Girardi. “And that’s our goal in all this – to bring this community together… for the success of those kids.”
