Residents are being encouraged to acknowledge World Suicide Prevention Day Sept. 10, as a number of local awareness initiatives are underway.

The Sarnia-Lambton Suicide Prevention Committee (SLSPC) will host a free community event at the Lambton Mall between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., inviting children, youth and families to participate in an interactive activity and chat with community partners.

Also underway at the mall is a visual display (outside the food court) featuring community members and their personal stories.

Residents and businesses have also been encouraged to tie yellow ribbons and post lawn signs in areas around the community, to remind others that they’re not alone.

Tickets are also on sale for a Duc D’Orleans cruise hosted by Project Mental Wellness, featuring live music from See Spot Run, wth proceeds going to benefit Three Oaks Cabin — a respite cabin currently under construction in Southwestern Ontario, for farmers and first responders.

The SLSPC has also announced it has partnered with Great Lakes Neurofeedback & Counselling, and the Sarnia Community Foundation, to host a free, eight-week support group for adult family members who have been impacted by suicide.
