Sarnia residents will have more access to recreation facilities as Ontario’s reopening plan unfolds, starting with the Cox Youth Centre splash pad on Saturday, city staff say.

The splash pad at 334 Russell St. S. will be open weekends from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday to Friday, the splash pad is open from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sessions are free but the maximum number per session is 30, including lifeguards and parents, to allow physical distancing.

Swimming in the adjacent pool will follow the same schedule once the pool is allowed to reopen, at which time capacity limits will increase.

Participants must sign in and provide a telephone number, and children under 10 require adult supervision.

The three-step provincial plan gradually lifts public health measures based on vaccination rates and other health indicators.

Access to more facilities is expected on June 14, provided public health indicators continue to improve.

Currently, groups of five or fewer are allowed use soccer and sports fields, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts.

Picnic shelters and areas are available for passive use only, staff said.

Each step in the reopening plan is expected to last 21 days.

Arenas and all indoor sport and recreational fitness facilities are included in step three, city staff said.
