Sarnia is seeking public input on a proposal to rename Sarnia Arena after Pat “Whitey” Stapleton, the first Sarnian to play full-time in the National Hockey League.

Comments received by April 26 will help shape a future staff report for city council’s consideration.

Resident Brian Keelan proposed the name change and organized a petition that gathered more than 2,000 names in support.

Stapleton began his NHL career with the Boston Bruins in 1961 but played most of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks. In eight seasons with Chicago he was named Second Team All Star three times. He also represented Canada at the 1972 summit against the Soviet Union.

Stapleton died last year at the age of 79.
