It all came down to the last event on the final day.

When Northern Collegiate squared off May 10 against Chatham-Kent in the marque open boys 4x400 metre relay, also on the line was the overall ‘AAA’ team championship of the Lambton Kent high school track and field season.

And the battle went right down to the final anchor leg of the relay, when Northern’s Sebastian Smith held off a late surge by James Muharrem of the Chatham-Kent to eke out victory by a mere 0.26 seconds to clinch the overall team crown.

In the end, the Vikings finished with 906.5 points at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent was second with 757 points while Sarnia’s St. Patrick's High School third with 618 points.

Northern won three different divisions: junior girls and senior and junior boys.

St. Pat’s claimed the midget boys division award.

Individually, Kaylee White of Northern had an outstanding meet, winning all three of her races at 800 metres, 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres.

She shared the overall junior girls award with Payton Sabourin of Chatham Kent.

Michael Pugslley of Great Lakes Secondary shared the over junior boys award with Aidan Lachine of Pain Court.

The midget boys overall award was shared by five Sarnia high school students: Carter

Amaral, Aiden Wildfong and Luc Lacroix of St. Pat’s, and Avery Simley and

Carter Barron of Northern.

Top eight athletes from each event moved on the Southwestern Ontario meet scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
