Sarnia Rapids makes a splash in swim-a-thon fundraiser

Nearly 50 local athletes took part in the Sarnia Rapids swim-a-thon this past weekend at the YMCA Jerry McCaw Family Centre Sarnia.

The swimmers completed a combined 200 lengths of the main pool, for two hours — covering a distance in kilometres from Sarnia to Windsor — with their stroke of choice, said board member Jeffrey Jones.

“What is equally impressive is that these young swimmers raised over $7,000 for the YMCA Community Starts Here Campaign,” Jones said. “That will help subsidize memberships for those in need of financial assistance to help ensure no one is turned away from our programs and services because of inability to pay full fee.”

The event was organized by coaches Kate Schleihauf and Frankie Montanino, while coach Tearza and Coach Sue Weir and parents helped track the swim laps and host an after party, Jones added.

“The Sarnia Rapids swim team loves to make a big splash in our community,” he stated. “We certainly have some strong, young leaders and look forward to more events like this in the future, which is looking bright!”
