Hometown kid Landen Hookey had a busy night — he was just an assist short of the Gordie Howe hat trick as the Owen Sound Attack downed the Sarnia Sting 4-0 Friday night at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
Sarnia has now lost four in a row as their record drops to 9-12-0-0 on the season.
Attack goaltender Carter George was named the game's first star, making 26 saves and picking up his second shutout of the season. Nick Surzycia was in net for the Sting, stopping 16 of 20 in the loss.
The Attack scored twice in the first to go ahead 2-0; Declan Waddick scored his third of the season at the 5:03 mark of the opening period, followed by Ethan Bouroughs eighth of the season just three minutes later on the powerplay.
Owen Sound would hold onto that two-goal lead until midway into the third period.
Cedrick Guindon notched his 10th of the season 10:55 into the final period, giving the Attack a 3-0 lead.
Just a few minutes later, Sarnia native Landen Hookey would get a chance from the slot; he’d make no mistake firing a snapshot past Surzycia, and lifting the Owen Sound Attack to a 4-0 lead.
Hookey, the Lambton Jr. Sting product, was named the game’s second star, while teammate Waddick took third star honours as the Owen Sound Attack swept the three stars.
While Sarnia had six chances with the man advantage, they were unable to get the puck behind Attack netminder Carter George, as special teams played a role. Owen Sound had three powerplay chances, scoring once.
The Sting now look ahead to Sunday afternoon, as they welcome the Flint Firebirds to the Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
Flint hosts the Owen Sound Attack Saturday night before coming to Sarnia, and will look to be riding a three game winning streak when they face the Sting, if they can beat Owen Sound.
