Officials were on hand last week to announce the development of a new Waste Management (WM) renewable natural gas (RNG) infrastructure project at Twin Creeks landfill in Watford.
“This is an exciting announcement for WM as the company continues to invest heavily in projects relating to the beneficial use of landfill gas,” said Tracy Black, WM Canada area vice president. “We invite the local community to be part of the evolution of the Twin Creeks Environmental Centre and hope this is something that our stakeholders can be proud of.”
Construction for the project is expected to begin by end of 2023, officials said, pointing to the use of state-of-the-art equipment to convert landfill gas captured from the Twin Creeks site into pipeline-quality gas for injection into the nearby commercial gas transmission and distribution network.
“The fuel would be accessible by many commercial and industrial entities which WM believes will potentially help assist them with their environmental and emissions targets and the acceleration of clean manufacturing mandates,” a news release stated. “Once completed and operational, the Twin Creeks RNG facility is estimated to produce up to approximately two million MMBtu of RNG per year, which by estimates provided, could be enough energy to heat an estimated 35,000 homes in Ontario.”
WM has begun leading a series of local consultations and engagement events around the project. The company hosted an open house in April where community members were invited to learn more about the investment.
