Sarnia’s municipal election has officially begun.
Would-be candidates for mayor, city and city/county council, and school board trustee have until July 27 to file nomination papers.
Those seeking the job of mayor or councillor must submit 25 endorsements from eligible voters, using a form found in packages available from the clerk’s department at City Hall, and online at http://sarnia.ca/city-government/elections/2018-municipal-election.
New this year, third-party advertisers must register with the clerk, identify themselves on advertising, keep financial records, and comply with the Municipal Elections Act.
Corporations and trade unions can no longer contribute to municipal campaigns, but can contribute to third-party advertisers or register as third-party advertisers.
Voting in Sarnia will be by Internet and telephone only between Oct. 11 and Oct. 22. Ballots can be cast from anywhere via the Internet or a touch tone phone.
Those who need assistance casting ballots, or don’t have an Internet connection, can visit help centres during the voting period at City Hall, Clearwater Arena, St. Patrick’s High School and Bright’s Grove School.
