Point Edward budget approved

Point Edward residents will have to pay a little more after village council approved a 1.45% tax rate increase on March 29.

Point Edward residents will have to pay a little more after village council approved a 1.45% tax rate increase on March 29.

It will now cost a village homeowner $671 for every $110,000 of property assessment, a $10 increase on the municipal portion of his or her tax bill.

Councillors passed an operating budget of $4.1 million and a capital spending of $2.3 million.

The capital budget sets aside money to build a splash pad on the waterfront park at the Blue Water Bridge, as well a new roof at the OPP detachment, arena improvements and a new dump truck and fire truck.

Mayor Larry MacKenzie called it a “fair” budget.

“We will be moving forward with many capital projects while maintaining prudent operating expenditures,” he said.

The final tax bill will combine changes made to both the county portion and education portion of the bill.

Final tax bills in Point Edward will be mailed in the early part of June and be due by July 4 and Oct. 3.
