Area drivers are being reminded to use caution when construction begins at the Blue Water Bridge next week.

Construction starts on May 29, 2024 and is expected to last several months, which may cause traffic back-ups while the project is underway,” Lambton OPP said in a news release this week.

“Police are urging drivers to remain vigilant and be aware of the potential for slow or stopped traffic close to the Bluewater Bridge location. Following other vehicles too closely or failure to notice a vehicle stopped in front of you can lead to a serious, life-threatening collision.”

The Canada-bound (east-bound) span will be closed for maintenance through to October, according to the Federal Bridge Corporation Ltd. (FBCL). As a result, both directions of traffic will move to the U.S.-bound (west-bound) span.

The maintenance work is part of the Second Blue Water Bridge (SBWB) Rehabilitation Project.

“Lambton OPP will continue traffic enforcement efforts to ensure public safety for the duration of the construction project,” police added. “Enforcement activity will be augmented with the assistance of an OPP Aviation Services airplane. Police will target vehicles that follow too closely.”
