Students at Northern Collegiate pulled through for the Inn of the Good Shepherd this year, collecting thousands in both non-perishable and monetary donations for their third annual food drive.

For the past two weeks, students from the Grade 12 Leadership class collaborated with student council members for the third annual event which brought in the equivalent of more than 13,000 cans, said student council co-prime minister Gabby Jones.

“People get very competitive,” she said with a laugh, pointing to a free-throw competition that helped encourage students to get involved. “Classes had to bring in at least 50 cans to participate.”

Students brought in more than 4,600 cans and some $4,000 in monetary donations.

“One dollar is the equivalent of two cans… so that’s about 13,200 cans,” said Jones. “And our goal was 6,000.

“This was an all-hands-on-deck event,” she added. “Really a collaborative effort involving so many people.”

Inn of the Good Shepherd director Myles Vanni was on hand Monday to help load the donations, which lined the hallway inside the Sarnia school.

“I walked in and saw everything and just said, ‘wow,’” he said. “This is amazing.”
