A new municipal accommodation tax on Sarnia hotels, motels and short-term rental providers like Airbnb will likely begin March 1.
The bylaw will require short-term accommodation providers to collect and remit the 4% tax on guests who occupy a room for less than 30 days.
The MAT tax is expected to generate at least $300,000 annually. The money will be shared between Tourism Sarnia-Lambton, for marketing and promotion, and Sarnia, to be used at council’s discretion.
City staff is currently preparing a bylaw and sharing agreement for council’s consideration on Feb. 10, with an implementation date expected of March 1.
