Man faces impaired driving charge after cyclist struck in Sarnia

A 26-year-old Sarnia man faces a number of charges, including driving while impaired, after a cyclist was struck Sunday afternoon.

Sarnia Police say the incident occurred around 2 p.m. when the driver of a vehicle turned into the entrance of an address in the 1300 block of London Road, striking a cyclist who was crossing the entrance on the sidewalk.

The vehicle then traveled through the parking lot, attempting to flee the area, police said in a news release.

“Fortunately, two witnesses in motor vehicles were able to pin the vehicle in, preventing it from leaving the area and in turn called the police.”

The accused failed a roadside screening test, was taken into custody and subsequent showed was three times over the legal limit.

The accused faces charges of failing to stop at an accident causing bodily harm; operation causing bodily harm; and operating while impaired.

The cyclist was taken to hospital and treated for serious injuries.
