Several organizations are coming together to address the growing shortage of personal support workers.
The South West LHIN is funding 200 bursaries worth $1 million to help students earn PSW certificates at Lambton College and three other colleges.
Lambton will award 20 scholarships valued at $5,000 each over the next three semesters.
And three organizations —Victoria Order of Nurses, CarePartners, and OneCare — have committed to hiring 165 PSW students.
Sarnia-Lambton is experiencing a shortage of personal support workers so severe it’s impacting the ability of health-care agencies to deliver services.
Lambton College offers a one-year PSW program that trains for jobs in long-term and retirement homes, hospitals and home-care placements.
College president Judith Morris called the bursaries great news.
“We recognize there is a shortage of PSWs in our region and we hope these professional and financial supports will encourage more students to pursue this career pathway.”
