Imperial Oil says residents can expect to see elevated flaring as process equipment is shut down at the Sarnia site.
“As part of a planned spring maintenance turnaround, elevated flaring is expected to begin overnight,” the company said in a community notification, Wednesday. “As a result of increased flaring, additional noise may be heard offsite.
“The flares are an environmentally-approved safety device intended to burn off excess product or materials, and are especially important whenever we shut down or restart process units,” Imperial added. “We plan to take measures to minimize the use of flaring where possible.”
