Collisions reduced at two busy city intersections

Safety improvements at two dangerous intersections have had a positive impact, early data suggests. Sarnia introduced a “road diet” on Colborne Road in 2018 that reduced four lanes of traffic to three and added bike lanes on each side.

Safety improvements at two dangerous intersections have had a positive impact, early data suggests.

Sarnia introduced a “road diet” on Colborne Road in 2018 that reduced four lanes of traffic to three and added bike lanes on each side.

Between 2016 and 2018, the intersection at Colborne and Michigan averaged 6.5 collisions a year.

But in 2019, after new turn lanes with better sight lines were introduced, the intersection had just one reported collision, according to a recent city staff report.

Likewise, the intersection of Exmouth and Christina streets averaged nine collisions annually in 2016-18.

But that number fell to two in 2019 after an advanced left turn signal was added for westbound traffic on Exmouth.
