Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser returns Saturday

Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton (HFHS/L) is hosting a family-friendly fundraiser this Saturday, February 24, and there is still time for Sarnia-Lambton residents to join and walk in The Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY).

“There's no registration fee, there's no minimum amount to donate or to raise. So we're not putting any pressure on people to do that,” said Davis Waters, CEO, HFHS/L. “People can still register to walk or to volunteer, right up to the day of the event.”

Due to the rising cost of materials, donations are more important than ever, he noted.. This year, the fundraising goal is $65,000.

“Every time we build a home, it costs us about $220,000. So to raise $65,000, and [have it] pay basically say 25% of a home was huge for us.”

So far, more than 20 teams have signed up to walk with more than 150 participants. The event is also being supported with the help of more than 40 volunteers.

The walk begins and ends at the Polish Hall, at 173 Exmouth Street in Sarnia. Participants can expect to register on-site by 4 p.m. and, following announcements, start to walk as a group along a 2km or 5km route at 5 p.m., followed by a light meal to warm up again.

“We’ve got four local chefs, great food, treats from local bakeries and local coffee shops,” said Waters. “So expect to come back to warm food.”

The event aims to help participants better understand the experience of being on the streets during a cold Canadian winter, by walking together in the chill of the night, while raising funds to aid the work of Habitat for Humanity Sarnia/Lambton in providing much-needed support. “This event is easy to do,” said Waters. “Just come out and have a good time, laugh and walk for a good cause — walk to allow Habitat for Humanity to build another home for a family that's in need.”
