Plains Midstream Canada plans to install a 5 MW/10 MWh battery energy storage system at its facility in Sarnia.
The company said when the battery becomes operational next year it will charge from the grid during off-peak hours, when low-carbon electricity from renewable sources is more readily available.
It will then discharge during peak demand hours that currently require power generation from non-renewable sources.
Five MWs is enough to power about several thousand homes.
“Industrial-scale battery energy storage systems are a key element of supporting continued growth in renewables,” said Vice President Dan Noack.
“This capital-efficient project represents another step in aligning our operations with advancing technology and emerging energy opportunities.”
The Plains Midland natural gas liquids fractionation and storage facility in Sarnia is a joint venture with Pembina Pipeline Corporation.
