The Sarnia Sting chose a California-born centre of Ukrainian parents with their first pick, the 10th overall, in the OHL Priority Selection on Saturday, April 11.
Alexander “Sasha” Chmelevski, 15, moved east to further his hockey career and played with the Honeybaked minor hockey system in Detroit, where he had 10 goal and 24 points in 25 games this past season.
Sting owner and head coach Derian Hatcher has strong ties to the Honeybaked system, with his brother Kevin having previously coached there.
Sarnia had two second round selections and chose centre Ryan McGregor of Burlington, and goaltender Aiden Hughes of London, both 16.
