Rising water levels have prompted Point Edward to ask federal officials to create a “no wake” zone in the St. Clair River.

The wakes of passing vessels is endangering workers and swimmers and creating erosion on the shoreline, said CAO Jim Burns.

The village has asked the Canadian Coast Guard and Transport Canada to review the current shoreline speed limit of 10 knots when vessels are within 30 metres of shore.

Point Edward would also like to see the regulations amended so the entire width of its shore is classified as a no wake zone. Additional signage and buoy are also requested, as well as increased enforcement of speed limits.

Record high water levels are submerging groynes and breakwalls, creating an additional hazard for boaters.
