The Sarnia Legionnaires are chasing history.
Coach Dan Rose's Western Jr. 'B' hockey club is creeping up on the franchise record for fastest start to a season.
But the Legion crew, which has won nine in a row since the start of the current campaign, still has a long way to go if it hopes to make it into the record books. That's because the 1989/90 squad (which was known as the Bees) came out of the gate with 18 consecutive conquests.
The most successful start by a Sarnia Jr. 'B' club wearing Legionnaire colours was the 1958/59 outfit, which won 12 straight to start the year. Sixty-five years ago, when the team's moniker was the Sailors, it won all 16 regular season games.
The Legionnaires will try for their 10th straight triumph Thursday, Oct. 9 when they host the LaSalle Vipers.
Rose said his players are determined to keep rolling. “These kids are excited about the streak, they don't want it to end.”
