Northern's Valhalla Vikings capture silver at Ontario Cup in Brampton

Sarnia’s Valhalla Vikings U13 Girls Competitive Travel Team earned silver medals at the Ontario Basketball Association’s Ontario Cup Championship, held this past weekend in Brampton.

The Vikings went undefeated in their first three games of the tournament, advancing to the gold medal match in Division 3 and finishing as silver medalists. Their performance placed them among the top teams within a competition that featured nine divisions and squads from across Ontario.

The team’s achievement reflects several years of steady development. The program was initially built under Coach John Thrasher, who focused on foundational skills and training. Leadership later transitioned to Coach Will Lopez, who guided the Vikings into competitive play through the Ontario Basketball League (OBL) and into sanctioned tournaments across the province.

The U13 Valhalla Girls team represents Northern Collegiate Institute & Vocational School, and beyond the court, team members have taken part in a number of community activities. Highlights include a mentorship day with the Lambton Lions, a joint practice session with Northern Collegiate’s senior girls basketball team, and volunteering efforts at the Inn of the Good Shepherd.

The silver medal marks an important milestone for the Valhalla Basketball Club, showcasing the dedication of players, coaches, and volunteers in promoting youth sport and community engagement in Sarnia–Lambton.
