The Sarnia Legionnaires were in Elmira Sunday night taking on the midwest leading Sugar Kings, as Elmira would extend their winning streak to three games with a 7-2 win at home.
The Legionnaires offense struggled to get going, as Elmira would dominate the second and third periods both on the shot clock and the scoreboard.
Elmira held a 32-21 edge in shots and had the special teams working for them. The Sugar Kings were one for four on the powerplay, while going a perfect six for six on the penalty kill, and scoring twice shorthanded.
Tanner Macdonald had the lone goal in the first period for Elmira — his first of the season — giving the Sugar Kings a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.
Bardy Schwindt would score a power-play goal just about six minutes into the second period; his fourth of the year put Elmira in front 2-0. Brendan Gerber responded less than two minutes later — his 14th of the season while shorthanded — to put Elmira up 3-0, 7:47 into the middle period.
Sarnia would get on the board moments later; Colin Langstaff found the back of the net for his fourth of the season as Sarnia cut the Sugar Kings lead to 3-1 just over nine minutes into the period.
The Sugar Kings would score another shorthanded goal before the end of the second however, taking a 4-1 lead on Dustin Good’s first goal of the season with less than four minutes to play in the period.
The third period would look much like the second, with Elmira scoring the first two goals of the period.
Jordyn Ertel scored his third at the 8:22 mark of the third, while Joey Martin had his ninth of the season to give Elmira a commanding 6-1 lead midway through the final period.
Sarnia would add another as Cameron Graham would score his eighth of the season to cut the lead to 6-2. Jimmy Monks and Ty Moffat had the assists, but this would be as close as the Legionnaires would come.
Brendan Gerber would add his second of the game, and 15th of the season as the Sugar Kings would coast to a 7-2 win.
Logan Phillips was in net for the Legionnaires, making 25 saves in the loss.
Sarnia now turns their attention to the LaSalle Vipers who will be in Sarnia this Thursday night.
LaSalle leads the season series 2-0 after a 6-1 and 4-1 win earlier this season. The Vipers are 12-5-1-0 on the season and sit in third place in the Western Conference. The Legionnaires are currently 7-9-1-0, and are sixth.
Sarnia Legionnaires will also be holding their Christmas Swag sale this Thursday at the Pat Stapleton Arena, Legionnaires fans can save up to 40% on Legionnaires merchandise just in time for Christmas.
The jersey auction in support of the Sarnia Humane Society continues as well, the Legionnaires are auctioning off their Sarnia Bees warm up jerseys till the end of the month, with proceeds going to help the Sarnia Humane Society. Bids will be accepted until November 30th.
Bids can be placed at all home games, with the next game against LaSalle Thursday, puck drops at 7:10pm at the Pat Stapleton Arena.
