We at The Sarnia Journal are proud to continue our tradition of honouring the men and women who fought to protect our way of life, and pay tribute to those who continue to serve today. For the seventh year, we offer Sarnia Remembers: a series of stories — most being told for the first time outside of the families of the participants — commemorating Sarnia’s military contributions. Beginning Monday, The Journal will feature the works of Tom Slater (author and founder of the War Remembrance Project), Tom St. Amand, and Randy Evans. Stories can be found here, on our website, each day leading up to and including Nov. 11. We thank them for their contributions — the hours of research, interviews, fact-checking and compiling photos — and allowing us to share their work, which is truly a labour of love. We also thank the families who so generously shared their family tales, letters and photo albums. "Sarnia, like thousands of other communities across Canada, had many of its sons and daughters answer the call of duty to serve their country during times of war,” Slater writes. “These “ordinary” local citizens left the comforts of their homes, as well as their schools, farms, jobs, trades and careers. They left their loved ones—grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, husbands and wives, children and friends—in response to a nation’s call to fight in far off lands.” "In the fight to save the oppressed and occupied, to defeat evil forces, and to secure for others the peace, liberty and freedoms that we enjoy in this great country, some made the supreme sacrifice.” We hope you take the time to read, share and reflect. Special thanks to our sales and graphics team, and all of our advertisers, without whom, this wouldn't be possible. Lest we Forget.
