It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the medically assisted passing of Ted E Kirkland, on June 10, 2025, after a courageous and lengthy battle with Huntingtons Disease. Ted passed away surrounded by his family and his favourite furry companions. Ted leaves behind his wife and best friend Lori, his two daughters Lindsay and Brooke, and his four-legged friends Tucker and Norman. Ted was the youngest son of late Dick (2015) and Pauline (2024) Kirkland and son in law to Bev Burley (2002). A brother to Clarke and Chuck, and sister Karen Kirkland, and brother in-law to Bill Burley and Sue Brandes. an uncle to Chelsea (Kean) and Chad Burley and Robbie Richter

Ted met Lori while he and family were building their family cottage. While we’re sure that Ted had many expectations and dreams of his family spending time there, we’re not sure he could have imagined how many memories would be made around the long dining room table. The cottage was where Ted was truly happiest.

Ted was the definition of a Girl Dad before the term existed. He could often be found standing in the corner of whatever arena his girls were playing in, or watching whatever ridiculous show they had on. It didn’t matter if he knew anything about the sport or show as long as he was with his girls he was happy. Ted loved quietly but fiercely. He showed acceptance and loyalty to those he loved despite their differences and instilled those values in his girls.

Ted was a gentle giant and someone who loved the outdoors. When he wasn’t supporting his girls or watching Nascar, he loved to spend his time in the woods or on the water. He’d be the first one to tell you that there is nothing better than an early morning nap in a hunting blind with his dogs or watching the sunset over the lake on his boat.

Ted loved the summer months and could often be found in his backyard oasis. He spent hours watering, weeding and tending to the countless different flowers he planted, all in attempts to help bring back the monarch butterflies. The fan favourite every year was the giant sunflowers that often grew 8+ feet tall. Gardening was a passion that he shared with siblings, and one he was always excited to show off.

After receiving his Huntington's Disease diagnosis, Ted remained hopeful. He participated in medical trials to find a cure for others diagnosed with the disease. HD robbed him of his cognitive ability, communications skills, mobility and mental health.  He kept up his hope and strength for as long as he could and didn’t let the weight of the disease stop him in his tracks. He truly was a fighter and fought long and hard until the very end.

In accordance with Ted’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private family burial will be held.

Thank you to HD Researchers and Neurologists at North York General, Dr Kim and the hospice staff from St Joseph’s hospice and our special Nurse Mandy.

Sympathy may be expressed through donations to Huntington Society of Canada (cheques only at the funeral home please). Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
