Monday September 30 marks Truth and Reconciliation Day, also known Orange Shirt Day. It is a day that honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. These are the events that are happening in and around the day to honour the movement around Lambton County.
Thursday, September 26
Aamjiwnaang First Nation will be hosting a dinner at the Maawn Doosh Gumig Pavillion/Memorial Monument from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It will include cultural teachings, scavenger hunt, crafts and more.
Saturday, September 28
Residential school survivor Lila Bruyere is hosting a walk that starts at noon from City Hall and will march down to the First Nations Flag Plaza on Front Street. Everyone is welcome and at the event will feature speakers, drums, and dancing.
Monday, September 30
Lambton College has planned a full day that includes an Indigenous-owned Business Showcase, an Indigenous student panel, and an exclusive film screening and discussion with Walpole Island First Nation filmmaker Derek Sands and his newest short film “Gaa ZhaaWiijig: Survivors.” All are welcome to attend and full details are available at lambtoncollege.ca.
