Sarnia Spirit U14 girls’ soccer team makes tourney finals

The Sarnia Spirit U14 girls’ soccer team capped its season with an appearance at the Henderson Soccer Tournament in London on Labour Day weekend. The team made it to the final against London United.

The Sarnia Spirit U14 girls’ soccer team capped its season with an appearance at the Henderson Soccer Tournament in London on Labour Day weekend.

The team made it to the final against London United. Savanah Vanhooft scored a pair of goals for Sarnia in the 2-2 tie, but the Spirit lost 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

After winning the Elgin Middlesex Soccer District League championship last year, the Spirit U14's moved up the elite seven-team Western Region Soccer League this season. The Spirit finished fourth overall with a 6-6 record.

In Ontario Cup action, the team made it to the final four, losing to Ajax in Brampton. Sarnia was also finalists in Michigan in the Canton Cup and the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Tournament.

The Spirit is preparing to play indoors at the BMO Centre in London beginning in mid-October.

Tryouts for next year’s team for players born in 2004 or 2005 will be held at the Sarnia Girls Soccer Club on Sept. 29 at 10 a.m., Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. and Oct. 6 at 10 a.m. Contact head coach Kevin Simmonds at [email protected] or manager Susie Sioutis at [email protected].
