A 16-year-old driver faces charges after emergency crews responded to a truck that was sinking in the St. Clair River, Friday.
Sarnia Police say the incident occurred along St. Clair Parkway near Marlborough Lane, when the vehicle left the roadway, with two individuals on board.
“Fortunately both teenagers made it to shore safely after being unable to open any doors, as they were able to break a window to make their escape from the submerging truck,” a news release noted.
Point Edward Fire & Rescue said in a Facebook post that firefighters with the service’s marine vessel were on hand along with Lambton EMS, Sarnia Police and Lambton OPP.
“Firefighters were dispatched for a vehicle which left the roadway and entered the St. Clair River,” the service noted. “The occupants were able to make it to shore without injuries. Firefighters remained on scene to assist with our marine vessel until the vehicle was removed from the river.”
The teen faces two charges: careless driving and Class G1 licence holder unaccompanied by qualified driver — both under the Highway Traffic Act.
Police are still investigating and anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Rich Scott at 519-344-8861 ext. 6217 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if you wish to remain anonymous.
