City council has approved permanent, new “bump-out lane restrictions” to slow traffic at the intersection of Errol and Indian roads, near Errol Road School.
The intersection is a safety concern because of the number of traffic lanes on Indian Road, the high speed of traffic and the distance pedestrians must cross. The intersection is the only one in the city with two crossing guards.
Curb bump-outs were installed as a pilot project last year, with yellow concrete blocks placed on the road to restrict lanes and narrow the intersection so pedestrians only have to cross 65 feet (20 metres).
Staff did receive complaints about snow clearing problems but the general feedback is positive, especially from crossing guards, said engineering general manager Dave Jackson.
The permanent intersection changes will cost about $300,000 with the work to be done in 2021.
Staff is also looking at a similar solutions for Cathcart and Indian Road, and Cathcart and Murphy Road.
