LETTER: Election concerns - On behalf of Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor,

It is deeply concerning to the members of Climate Action Sarnia Lambton that the focus on Trump and tariffs have left the conversation on Climate Change behind. Yes, what is going on south of our border is of great concern, but climate change also requires our attention in the election.

Around the world, focus on climate change is garnering action far beyond North America.

It is time that this changes, and this election is an opportunity for us to encourage/demand our leaders to take this seriously.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change endorsed energy and carbon taxes.  The Carbon Tax in Canada fell short on acceptance due more to   how it was presented than its effectiveness. However, it is gone now, and a new approach is required that focuses more on oil/gas  companies taking responsibility in reducing emissions.

They need to focus on the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy that must take place and this includes a plan to take care of the employees as jobs are lost.

The billions that are spent on greenwashing and aggressively fighting those that are working so hard to mitigate climate change must be reassigned to this need.

So, be sure to ask your local candidate what their plans are to address, climate change, and the issues above. And don’t fall for carbon sequestration. We have been working on that for over 50 years and it’s too late to rely on that to save this beautiful planet.

And remind them that you are not only speaking on your concern for the severe threats of climate change, but also for Mother Nature‘s biodiversity loss and other crises, including the health of ourselves, our children and our grandchildren.

When you speak with a politician, they know there are hundreds more people who share your values and passion. This is the moment to make sure our voices are heard.

Please vote!
