A rare backyard visitor, Sarnia’s city bird (Red-headed Woodpecker)

The other day, I was absolutely delighted to spot a Red-headed Woodpecker visiting my backyard peanut feeder here in Sarnia. This wasn’t just a treat for the eyes — this bird holds special meaning, as the Red-headed Woodpecker is officially Sarnia’s city bird.

Sadly, this species is listed as endangered in Ontario, largely due to habitat loss, removal of dead or dying trees (which they rely on for nesting), and declining insect populations. Once common in parts of Southern Ontario, sightings like this have become increasingly rare.

The Red-headed Woodpecker is not only stunning but ecologically important. Their presence reminds us of the unique biodiversity we have right here in Sarnia and the responsibility we all share to help protect it.

If we want to continue seeing these beautiful birds in our city, we can support their survival by preserving natural spaces, leaving dead trees standing when safe to do so, planting native species, and raising awareness about the threats they face.
