Two new exhibitions opening this month at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery (JNAAG) will invite viewers to reflect on the forces of nature and imagined futures through the work of Canadian artists.
Futures, a solo exhibition by Toronto-based artist Rajni Perera, runs from April 25 to August 31. Known for her vibrant and speculative visual style, Perera blends elements from Sri Lankan and Indian art traditions with science fiction and medieval iconography. The exhibition, organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, explores themes of migration, resilience, and survival in damaged environments.
Storm Watch, presented alongside Futures, brings together works from JNAAG’s permanent collection that explore the visual impact of extreme weather. The show includes pieces by Canadian artists such as Christopher Pratt, Rita Letendre, A.J. Casson, and David Blackwood, offering varied interpretations of nature’s intensity through historic and contemporary perspectives.
“These exhibitions invite visitors to consider both our potential futures and our evolving relationship with nature’s power,” said JNAAG curator Sonya Blazek.
A members-only reception will be held on First Friday, May 2, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring an appearance by Rajni Perera.
JNAAG is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays until 8:30 p.m. More information is available at jnaag.ca.
