BUSINESS JOURNAL: Alta Health and Performance

Born and raised in Sarnia, Dr. Rosangela Spadafora is a chiropractor with a focus on prenatal and postpartum care.

The alumni of the former St. Christopher’s Catholic Secondary School in Sarnia officially took over Alta Health and Performance in July 2022. Last year, they moved to 805 Christina St. N., in Point Edward.

After earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guelph, majoring in Human Kinetics, she studied chiropractic care at New York Chiropractic College in New York State. Returning to the Sarnia area to set up a practice was a no-brainer, said Spadafora.

“I think you almost have to leave where you're from, to embrace the beauty of where you grew up,” she says. “When I was away, I definitely got to learn and grow…but ultimately, I wanted to be back with my family and really wanted to give back to the community that I grew up in and support the people who have supported me…”

Although Alta Health and Performance started out as a chiropractic clinic focused on prenatal services, the added space at the new location in Point Edward meant that she could expand her services.

Fellow chiropractor Dr. Dane Chivers specializes in working with athletes, specifically golfers, and Dr. Brigitte Hynes-Taylor is introducing a new exercise program specifically catered to patients living with breast cancer.

The program is designed to help people through various stages of their cancer journey. Patients can enter the program if they want preventative care to focus on their health and wellness, if they’re going through treatment, or if they’re post treatment.

“It's meant for anybody who wants to kind of reclaim their power and work on their health and their nutrition,” says Spadafora. “It's a one-on-one session where you go through exercises together, focusing on strength, flexibility and range of motion. It's all based on your wellness goals and is very customizable.”

Postpartum yoga and stroller fit classes are other unique services offered at Alta Health and Performance.

“It’s a nice class to create some community among new moms but also get people moving, a little bit of cardio, a little bit of weight exercises,” says Spadafora. “It's really inclusive and very modifiable because a lot of people that participate are postpartum, and we want to be able to move in ways that feel comfortable depending where they are in their recovery,”

Alta Health and Performance has also recently expanded into some nutritional services in the clinic; nutritional counselling, wellness coaching, and movement-based classes.

“It's a little bit of everything all under one roof.”
